What is Real Food?

Real food is local/community-based. 
  • Reducing food miles, reduces energy consumption.
  • Supporting local farmers builds a stronger local economy.
  • Consumers and producers are more intimately connected. When we know where our food is coming from, we respect our food more. 

Real food is ecologically-sound.
  • Conserving and protecting the quality of soil. 
  • Lowering energy input.
  • Reducing water usage. 
  • Embracing biodiversity. 
  • Reducing fertilizer and pesticide use. 
  • Mimicking ecological processes for maximum yield.

Real food is fair.
  • Those in the production field are receiving a fair amount of profit.
  • Preserving labor rights.
  • Increasing equity in trade. 
  • Eliminating exploitation of food production workers. 
  • Not exploiting consumers based on socioeconomic status, lack of education, and vulnerability. 

Real food is humane.
  • Treating animals with dignity and respect.
